28 May Grounded in truth: Walking together into Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week is an important date in the Uniting calendar as we work together – and walk together – towards equality, inclusion and self-determination for Australia’s First Peoples.
Reconciliation requires the forming and maintaining of trusted, respectful relationships with Aboriginal peoples.
Gavin Mate, Head of Aboriginal Service Development for Uniting, says – in practice for us at Uniting – it’s about creating culturally safe, inclusive and welcoming services for our Aboriginal team members and the people we serve.
“Reconciliation is about our continuing relationship, recognising and respectfully engaging with our cultural differences,” said Gavin.
“It is only when we listen and understand each other we can achieve reconciliation in Australia and realise a unified future for us all.”
The Uniting Church has a long history of engagement with Australia’s First Peoples. In 1988 Church President, Sir Ronald Wilson, declared, “In concern for the integrity of our nation, and in co-operation with all citizens of goodwill, we Aboriginal and newer Australians have determined to stand together.”
This year’s Reconciliation Week theme is ‘Grounded in Truth’ and Gavin says the Uniting Church “has been grounded in truth for more than two decades” since it formally acknowledged the Church’s historical role and related detrimental impacts on Australia’s First Peoples in 1994.
Our journey of hope and growth continues
Through the commitments outlined in our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2019-2021, Uniting is uniquely positioned to effect change and social justice for Aboriginal peoples and communities. We are committed to the delivery of employment, partnerships and programs that support aspirations of self-determination and self-governance for Australia’s First Peoples.
Walking together into deeper healing
This year, we are renewing our commitment to reconciliation with a plan to help build a self-determined and self-governed future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We’ll keep you posted about the launch of our upcoming Reconciliation Action Plan – coming soon.
