Art from the Heart

Today, we’re celebrating the opening of the annual Art from the Heart of the Cross exhibition. This exhibition features art from clients of the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, a service that offers a compassionate, evidence-based response to drug use.

Now in its seventh year, the project was first developed in 2011, to help build a sense of social inclusion. The featured artworks are all created at the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre as part of its art therapy program.

Art from the Heart features over 120 artworks, mostly acrylic paintings on canvas, varying in sizes and media. Some artists have also used glitter or natural materials to enhance their paintings. Providing a safe, positive and empowering avenue for self-expression, artists like Erin explored themes such as family and home:

“This painting is about a mother’s love and is devoted to my children. My family, my children and my partner are the most important things in my life.”

Other artists, like Marley, have chosen to paint about their cultural heritage.

“The art project enabled me to meet other aboriginal artist who are very proud of their aboriginality, but also very humble, polite and respectful of all people, all nations and races. The best part is that poverty, drug dependence, homelessness did not destroy their spirit and loving personalities  They present a role model for me, the one I hope I can be in future for some young Aboriginal kids.”

Dr Marianne Jauncey, the Medical Director of Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, said “People who visit the injecting centre are people first and foremost.  This exhibition reminds us all that there’s so much more to our clients than the small amount of time they spend at the centre. These artworks are a wonderful display of their skills and talents and some of the stories they have to tell.”

Artist James said, “Some people say they are not talented for art, but I believe that we are all talented for something. It is just matter of being free and brave enough to try different things.”

Make sure you check out the exhibition before it closes.
